Freshwater pearl culture has existed for many years, but until recently it has not produced the quality and quantity of pearls to compete with saltwater pearl culture. In the past decade, however, the Chinese have developed a new technique for cultivating freshwaters, and are now producing wonderful pearls of exceptional value.

The bulk of production of Chinese freshwater pearls is still commercial quality pearls that mimic commercial quality Akoya pearls at half the price. But the new qualities and colors from China are indication of better things to come.

Today, beautiful freshwater pearls are available in a multitude of colors and sizes. They have become a mainstay in the fine jewelry market. Continuous improvements in quality have allowed them to almost rival their saltwater counterparts.

For the truest color, choose natural sunlight about midday.
